Isla Negra<\/span>, before being baptized as such, had several names such as “C\u00f3rdova”, for the creek that reaches the sea and bears that name, “Costa Azul” for the color of its waters, Las Gaviotas, as they are known to the birds that usually inhabit these coastal areas in search of crabs and small fish to feed on. The name change is authored by Pablo Neruda. The poet, after living for some time in the seaside resort, renamed the place with the nickname used by fishermen to identify this corner of the world, taking as reference the set of dark-colored rocks that rises meters from the coast. Isla Negra is not an island as such, we know, but once you are here you can feel as if it were.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the 1940s<\/span>, Eladio Sobrino, a Spanish sailor who came to the area and decided to stay forever – as we men can understand “forever” – showed riding horses and then sold part of his property to those who fell in love with the place, only to them. The words were blown by the wind and reached the ears of other beauty hunters. Thus the first, second and third lines, from the sea inland, were populated by intellectuals and artists, including painters, sculptors, painters, sculptresses, poets, musicians and storytellers, among others, giving rise to an explosion of activity and cultural exchange that has not been seen in these parts.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The museum<\/span> was not always a museum, it used to be a house. The house of the poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda and his wife the painter Delia del Carril. Neruda arrived from Europe in 1937 in search of peace and quiet to develop his poetic work, particularly to finish his work Canto General<\/span><\/i>a hymn to American history and nature.<\/span> Pablo and Delia’s house, later Pablo and Matilde’s, was a meeting point for both islanders and prominent visitors from all over the world.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWith nostalgia<\/span>, people talk about those days as if they had been “the golden days of the spa”. Golden times for social gatherings, for the conversation among neighbors and friends, for the fingers that ran with letters and colors on paper and for the hands that modeled clays, carved wood and gave different shapes to metals. Special mention should be made of the flourishing embroiderers of Isla Negra, who today are exhibiting their large cloth, embroidered in the 1950s, at the Venice 2024 design biennial. On the “Island”, as it was affectionately called by “natives” and new owners, the old and the newcomers lived peacefully together, the residents and the vacationers, and together they watched over the prosperity of such a precious and precious place.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In those foundational years,<\/span> Kurt and Marir\u00f3, he a Chilean-German and she an Argentinean-Italian, he an architect, she a landowner in the neighboring country, joined the group. The historian Carlos Rozas, known as “the navigator”, transformed them into characters in his chronicles. Visual artist, Anita Lagarrigue, portrayed Mar\u00eda Rosa in a watercolor and a sculpture. In this way, and through their home and descendants, they seem to live forever. The couple shared time and space with the Nobel Laureate and his contemporaries, weaving together a story that still resonates today.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
